MENA Newswire News Desk: Students from CNN Academy Abu Dhabi and local universities participated in an engaging masterclass on artificial intelligence (AI) led by global technologist and philanthropist Bill Gates. The session provided attendees with unique insights into the transformative potential of AI in addressing critical global challenges. Organized as part of a series of training programs by Abu Dhabi’s Creative Media Authority (CMA), the 30-minute interactive session allowed aspiring journalists to explore AI’s role in shaping the future.

Moderated by Becky Anderson, Managing Editor of CNN Abu Dhabi and host of Connect the World with Becky Anderson, the discussion highlighted how AI could contribute to solving global issues like disease eradication, climate change, and food security. Anderson also guided the audience through practical lessons in moderating conversations with high-profile figures, emphasizing preparation and research as essential tools for effective dialogue. Gates shared how the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation identifies global challenges and fosters innovative solutions to drive meaningful change, inspiring participants to consider AI’s possibilities in journalism and other industries.

Mohamed Dobay, Acting Director-General of CMA, underscored the significance of such initiatives. “Our commitment to nurturing young talent in Abu Dhabi’s creative industries continues to grow. Engaging with visionaries like Bill Gates exemplifies this dedication and demonstrates our focus on providing unparalleled learning opportunities for our youth,” he said.

Student participant Reem Al Mazrouei expressed her gratitude for the experience, describing it as transformative. “This opportunity to interact with Bill Gates and Becky Anderson was invaluable,” she said. “The masterclass not only deepened my understanding of technology and media but also highlighted the importance of preparation in conducting impactful interviews.”

The collaboration between the Gates Foundation and the UAE, ongoing since 2011, has advanced initiatives in global health, climate response, and innovation. Gates emphasized his philosophy of catalytic philanthropy, which prioritizes investments in innovative solutions to improve lives, particularly in underserved communities.

Launched in 2020, CNN Academy Abu Dhabi has become a cornerstone for journalism training in the region, equipping participants with essential newsroom skills through a comprehensive 12-week curriculum. The program includes interactive workshops, masterclasses, and digital tutorials, offering a practical foundation in journalistic ethics, verification, and storytelling. This event reflects Abu Dhabi’s vision to position itself as a hub for media excellence while fostering talent capable of addressing the complex challenges of a rapidly evolving world.
